Green Cleaning the Kitchen

Green Cleaning the Kitchen

Do you find yourself looking for a way to scrub the grime from your stove and oven, but you aren’t impressed by the traditional cleaning options on the shelves? The toxic chemicals found in traditional oven cleaners can be both dangerous and messy, but you can keep your kitchen looking and smelling squeaky clean with items found in your own pantry. The licensed electricians at 24/7 Electric aren’t just experts at wiring your kitchen – we also care about the chemicals that we use in our homes. Below are a few non-toxic recipes for cleaning your stove and oven in a more green (and healthy) way.

Method 1: Baking Soda Paste

What you will need:

  • Vinegar
  • Baking Soda
  • Water
  • Small Bowl
  • Rubber Gloves (Optional)

Steps to a squeaky-clean stove and oven:

  1. Mix it. You can create a paste with a mixture of baking soda and water to coat the inside of your oven and the top of your stove. Pour baking soda into a bowl, then keep adding tablespoons of water until a thick paste forms.
  2. Spread it. After removing your oven racks and burner plates, simply spread the paste all over the inside of the oven and over the stove top.
  3. Leave it. Let the paste sit on the stove top for a little while before you start wiping it off. Leave the paste inside the oven overnight or for at least 12 hours to cut through the tough grease and grime.
  4. Wipe it. Wipe off your stove top with a damp cloth and spritz on vinegar as needed to create a foamy substance as it hits the remaining baking soda. Give the inside of the oven the same treatment the next morning.

Method 2: Ammonia

What you will need:

  • Ammonia
  • Water
  • Dish Soap
  • Gallon Size Ziplock Bags
  • Small Bowl
  • Pot
  • Rubber Gloves (Optional)

Steps to a squeaky-clean stove and oven:

  1. Boil it. Fill a pot with water and let it boil on the stove.
  2. Bake it. While water boils, turn on your oven and warm it to 150 °F. Once it has heated up, turn it back off.
  3. Place it. Place the pot of boiling water onto the bottom shelf of the oven, and place a small bowl with ½ cup of ammonia onto the top shelf.
  4. Leave it. Close the oven door, and leave it to sit overnight.
  5. Bag it. Remove stove burners and place them inside of Ziplock bags with ¼ cup of ammonia each. Leave them to sit overnight.
  6. Air it. The next morning, remove the water and ammonia and leave your oven door open for about 15 minutes to air.
  7. Mix it. Add a few teaspoons of dish soap and a quart of warm water to the ammonia.
  8. Wipe it. Easily wipe away grease and grime from the inside of the oven with the ammonia mixture. Use a sponge to wipe off the burners and return them to the stove top.
